The Omnibus Is Settled: What the New EU Sustainability Rules Mean for Azerbaijani Suppliers

After two years of uncertainty, the European Union's sustainability reporting and due diligence rules have a final shape. Directive (EU) 2026/470 was published in February 2026 and entered into force on 18 March 2026. The simplification package cut the scope substantially, and that changes the conversation for companies in Azerbaijan that supply European buyers.
Under the revised Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, the thresholds are now more than 1,000 employees and more than 450 million euros in net turnover. First application is for financial years beginning on or after 1 January 2027. Sector specific standards have been removed, the move to reasonable assurance has been dropped, and limited assurance is retained, with a harmonised limited assurance standard due to be adopted by 1 July 2027. Member states must transpose the reporting changes by 19 March 2027.
The due diligence directive was cut back further. Thresholds rose to more than 5,000 employees and more than 1.5 billion euros in net turnover, transposition is due by 26 July 2028 with compliance from 26 July 2029, and the requirement to adopt and implement a climate transition plan was removed.
It would be easy to read this as pressure lifting. For Azerbaijani exporters and subsidiaries, that reading is a mistake. Fewer European companies now report, but those still in scope are large buyers, and they will continue to request emissions, workforce and governance data from their supply chains. The obligation does not sit on you directly. The commercial requirement arrives through the contract.
The practical step is to find out which of your European customers remain in scope, ask what data they will request and in what format, and make sure you can produce it without a scramble each year.
