ISSA 5000 arrives in December and changes who can assure sustainability data
Sustainability reporting has run ahead of sustainability assurance for years, with practitioners applying standards originally written for other purposes. ISSA 5000, General Requirements for Sustainability Assurance Engagements, closes that gap. It is effective for assurance engagements on sustainability information reported for periods beginning on or after 15 December 2026, and early application is permitted.
Three points matter for preparers. First, ISSA 5000 is an overarching standard covering the full engagement, from acceptance through to the assurance report, and it applies to both limited and reasonable assurance. Second, it applies whether the assurance is required by regulation or entirely voluntary, so a company assuring a voluntary sustainability report is inside its scope. Third, it sits alongside the IESBA ethics and independence standards for sustainability assurance, which means the independence questions your auditor asks will start to look like the ones they ask on a financial audit.
The practical implication is that sustainability data needs the same discipline as financial data: defined boundaries, documented methodology, evidence you can point to and internal controls that work. BDO Azerbaijan advises on sustainability reporting readiness and assurance scoping. Contact us to review whether your sustainability data would survive an ISSA 5000 engagement.
